| Pregnancy is a time for physical, emotional, mental and spiritual preparation for transition into new parenthood. Traditionally our ancestors celebrated this transition with Blessingway Ceremonies. Blessingway Ceremonies have a strong spiritual foundation combined with sisterhood, community and celebration of motherhood. The Ceremony can also be extended to honor both parents and older siblings to celebrate the entire families transition and arrival of the new addition. |

Within the African Diaspora we are a
collage of many different cultures and
traditions. Thus there are a variety of
components that can be included in a
Blessingway Ceremony. However there
are certain elements that distinguish a
Blessingway Ceremony from its distant
cousin the conventional Baby Shower.

- Intimate Setting-Blessingway
Ceremonies are personable events.
This is a time for close friends and
relatives of the parent(s) to give good
wishes and advice for new parenthood.
- Spiritual Foundation -As with all rites
of passage ceremonies, Blessingway
Ceremonies are a time to give thanks
and pay reverence to the Creator for
the new life
Food -It is the cornerstone to any
family event to"break bread". Home
made food is preferred to store bought
food. Menu can be pot luck or
prepared by the elder women in the
family.
Gifts-Contrary to a conventional Baby
Shower, gifts given at a Blessingway
Ceremony have deep meaning and
personal value.
- Pampering -The transition into new
parenthood often means new
sacrifices. Blessingway Ceremonies
include pampering of the mother (and
father) with baths, massages, or
whatever the parent(s) desire.
| Traditional Birthing Services is here to serve you! We can accommodate you on any level. - Coordinate We organize the guest list, the menu, the spiritual facilitator and the program. We also handle the invitations, materials and coordinate the postpartum support. - Facilitate We serve as the Blessingway MC. We lead the activities, discussion and prayer (if there's not spiritual leader present) - Belly Art We decorate the pregnant belly with paint or henna and/or we do a cast of the torso and paint it for a unique piece of art with sentimental value. - Photography We do still photography and videography of the Blessingway Ceremony documenting this very special occasion. |
