"Disease and disasters come and go like rain, but health is like the sun that illuminates the entire village."
                                                                                                             - (Luo proverb)
"Once a mother gives birth in many Afrikan
countries she is taken care of by the
community.  She is usually relieved of her
normal household duties.  Bantu mothers
have an N'sansi (nurse girl). She lives with
the mother for a few months.  She helps the
mother with her duties."

-Holistic Parenting from the Pan-Afrikan
Perspective

A postpartum N'sansi or doula is the
personal attendant to a new mother during
the early days after birth
.  During the first
Six to Eight weeks following childbirth, the
mother is in an intense recuperation-
physically, mentally, emotionally and
spiritually.  It is during this time where the
mother needs the most support.
Unfortunately all to often, in the US, new
mothers fail to receive this support which
can result in excess stress, fatigue,
postpartum depression and even infection.
ALL MOTHERS NEED SUPPORT!!

First time mothers AND veteran mothers
alike need support for the postpartum
period.  Caring for a newborn baby can be
very overwhelming, making the task of
keeping house and caring for older siblings
a challenge.

We encourage family and friends to
support new mothers through the
postpartum period.  The best support
comes from those that are most familiar
with the mother and her immediate family.
In this matter TBS can help to coordinate
the schedule for family and friends to visit
and help out.  This should be done prior to
the arrival of the baby-preferably at the
Blessingway Ceremony-to avoid a lapse in
support.

For those families who don't have familiar
resources, TBS is available for part-time,
fill-in or full time support
